In 2019 I was invited to co-teach (with Damon Locks) a with Sojourner Scholars, a summer program that offers college level humanities courses to high school students from four South Side Chicago Public Schools. The class was charged with creating a project around inequity and incarceration. We did this through an investigation of artistic processes that focused on the form of the political speech. Students studied liberation speeches and wrote their own. We created a back drop of images the students made and worked with an acting coach so students could deliver their own speeches in this project.
